The Center for Work & Health Technologies (CWHT) was established
at San Diego State University in 1991 to provide technical assistance
to business and industry through research, organizational development,
and education. This integral component of SDSU's Interwork Institute
represents a unique collaborative effort of university and industry-based
experts from health care, safety & health, human resources &
risk management, and rehabilitation. The Center Director, Dr. Robert
Hall, is an Adjunct Professor of Rehabilitation Counseling at SDSU.
The CWHT utilizes specialized areas of expertise in the above areas
to pursue research, education, and development projects in the fields
of rehabilitation and workforce development. Prior projects have
focused on the following areas: disability management programs,
health and safety programs, workers' compensation policy, occupational
information systems, worker skills analysis & development, maximizing
employee performance, job design & structuring, and organizational
and workforce development issues.
The CWHT staff has over 40 combined years of experience working
with public and private organizations, including:
- the establishment of medical & vocational disability case
management services;
- establishment of comprehensive vocational evaluation services;
- designing assessment services in schools, medical environments,
& rehabilitation centers;
- research/development and marketing of vocational assessment
devices;
- training on vocational assessment equipment;
- representation and education of disability insurance, health
care, and rehabilitation professionals and business entities on
local, statewide and national levels;
- coordination and integration of services with community colleges
and health facilities; and
- creation of disability management professional training and
workforce development initiatives for major employers.
Our relationships with business and industry have included the
workers' compensation and disability insurance industry, state disability
and employment organizations, state rehabilitation agencies, the
U.S. Department of Labor, the Veterans Administration, Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission, several university rehabilitation programs,
community colleges, county and city human resources departments,
organized labor, training programs, health care providers, and assessment
instrument manufacturers and publishers.
Consultation and work activities of CWHT principals and partners
have involved program design and evaluation, occupational analysis,
functional capacity screening assessments, ergonomic solutions,
comprehensive evaluations, ADA compliance, promotional and educational
sales presentations, rehabilitation management and planning, career
development, curriculum development, vocational placement, professional
staff training, and professional seminars and training via classroom
and distance education.
Previous cooperative efforts have been undertaken with by the
CWHT with Sharp Healthcare, California Association of Rehabilitation
and Reemployment Professionals, California Employment Development
Department/Disability Insurance Branch, the Insurance Educational
Association, the Disability Management Employer Coalition, the State
of California - Division of Workers'
CWHT projects have included:
- Design and implementation of the statewide Consumer Needs Assessment
for the California Department of Rehabilitation.
- Contract with the California Association of Rehabilitation and
Reemployment Professionals to investigation costs and outcomes
for the state workers' compensation vocational rehabilitation
program.
- Cooperative effort with the Insurance Educational Association
and the Disability Management Employer Coalition to deliver the
Certificate in Disability Management Professional (CPDM) program
via distance education.
- Post-graduate 21-unit graduate certificate program in Rehabilitation
Administration and Disability Management Services.
- Privatization of the Nevada Department of Rehabilitation Vocational
Assessment Centers: A Feasibility Study.
- Design and delivery of a "train the trainer" program
in Managing the Injured Worker for supervisors and workers'
compensation professionals for California state agencies
- Organizational Analysis of California State Disability Insurance
Programs: A Focused Study of Practice, Process, and Management.
- Research on conceptual framework and occupational variants used
in the Permanent Disability Rating Schedule - Contract with the
Division of Workers' Compensation - Disability Evaluation Unit,
State of California.
- Contract for Case Management Information Service for workers'
compensation program outcomes and cost tracking for subscribing
private rehabilitation providers located throughout California.
