The following Designated Subjects Credential courses meet the professional competencies specified by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for holders of preliminary credentials in Adult and Vocational Education. This two-level program first helps occupational and adult teachers develop survival-level classroom skills and then assists them in making the transition to full-time professional educators. These courses are approved by the San Diego Office of Education and partially meet the requirements to clear the preliminary credential.

LEVEL I
(Available On-Line or In-the-Classroom)

Fall Semester, August 28 - December 11, 2007

Instructional Processes of Adult and Vocational Education (Level I)
This course is concerned with the practice of teaching, with primary emphasis on adult learners and the teaching of vocational subjects. The course covers adult learning process, student diversity, special needs and mainstreaming, purpose and practice of teaching, ethical issues, teaching effectiveness, preparing to teach a course of study, curriculum research and development, direct instruction (including use of instructional technology), assessing student learning, classroom management and recordkeeping, and safety practices.

The course blends traditional classroom instruction, on-line learning resources, and independent project-based work.

The course covers the history, philosophy and scope of education, adult development, student diversity community and occupational relationships, program/course funding and marketing, advanced instructional methods (including application of instructional technology), student leadership develop, formation of advisory groups, and counseling and guidance.
