Area 4:
Assistive Technology and Universal Design
Description
Core Area 4 addresses the potential application of "high and
low tech" adaptations, including ergonomically designed work
and living environments, mobility-related equipment, alternative
and augmentative communication systems, customized modifications,
and more.
Participants will learn to integrate the use of assistive technology,
as part of a rehabilitation plan, expanding the employment and independent
living options of individuals with even the most significant disabilities.
They will also become familiar with assessing technology needs and
finding appropriate resources to adequately support individuals
to meet their work and living needs.
Potential
Participants
Participants may include individuals who provide supported employment
or supported living services or other rehabilitation and special
education personnel who may be designated as the "Assistive
Technology Resource" for their organization.

Opportunities
Participate
Based on program needs, training can be delivered in a variety
of formats. These include workshops, seminars, distance teaching,
individualized instruction, technical assistance, simulation and
train-the-trainers.

Graduate
Coursework in Core Area 4 may be applied toward a graduate degree
in Education, Rehabilitation or Engineering as an area of emphasis.
