to propose, develop, package, and deliver specific rehabilitation training programs and services, and to evaluate, monitor, and refine these programs.

Graduates of the SDSU program often serve as coordinators of existing programs, making services and benefits available to consumers. Rehabilitation administrators
may serve as program developers and entrepreneurs capable of identifying and responding to community needs. As both rehabilitation counselors and administrators they function as advocates for consumers providing information and interpreting the needs of people with disabilities for the public.

Building Careers in Design

Description:
The online course, “Building Careers in Design” for vocational rehabilitation counselors, disability services staff in higher education, and career counselors,
was originally funded by a contract with the RSA National Vocational Rehabilitation Technical Assistance Center. Vocational Rehabilitation counselors can
earn 30 to 36 CRC credits. Online registration and more information can be found posted at www.careersindesign.org.

The course entails distance learning and the introduction to web resources about career development in the design professions for people with disabilities.
It introduces the principles of universal design, which students will apply to evaluating their own work spaces as they serve people with disabilities.

“Building Careers In Design” encourages the participation of people with disabilities in the design professions in order to strengthen the practice of universal
design in creating more inclusive communities. A book of profiles of 21 designers with disabilities from around the world, Building Careers in Design:
A World Fit for People, is one text for the course. Students will interview a design professional with disabilities as part of this course.  Weekly discussion
boards will facilitate student interaction, and learning from peers.

Course co-instructors are Daniel Hunter, a landscape architect with disabilities who is a past VR client, and Jacklyn Butcher, a VR counselor who was a
participant in the pilot version of the course.
