Some of my friends call me Utu and some call me Moe, it really doesn't matter as long as they describe the right person. I'm a police officer with the department of public safety in American Samoa, and I have been working there for more than 10 years now. I am happily married with five wonderful kids.

In my school years, I attended grammar school at Alofau Elementary and Nu'uuli Poly-Tech High School. I took courses with American Samoa Community College (ASCC) and graduated in
2001 with an AS degree in Criminal Justice. I have been doing a little traveling every now and then and visit my family an brothers in the Military and everywhere in the US. I like to work hard and accomplish something important in my life for the benefit of today and the future.

Reasons for Joining This Program:
It is a blessing for me; I have been dreaming of going back to college and receive a BA, but I didn't have the time because of work, family, and church. Therefore, to attend college off-island to obtain a BA was not an option because then, I would have to leave an important part of my life behind. Then, when this program was introduced, I could not explained how happy I felt considering this great oportunity of a lifetime. I have three brothers and two of them both have Masters degrees. My brothers have encouraged me to join the BA program.

I will give it all with the best of my knowledge to accomplish the goal I've been dreaming and waiting for. If my brothers can do it, than I don't see why I can't.

One of My Special Talents Is:
I like to work with my hands. I'm a license carpenter. I fix everthing around my house. I also like to sing and dance to certain music.

4. Gaopoa, Nash
gaopoa_11@hotmail.com

Personal/Work Info:
I am the oldest of four girls and we weren’t fortunate to have any brothers. Our father was a typical Samoan father who was strict and over protective of his daughters. He always wanted
us to focus on what we wanted in life. Being the oldest was the hardest part of growing up as a Samoan, it was my job to see that my younger siblings were cared for, and that all of
the responsibilities regarding my family’s well-being were in order. That meant my social life as a teenager was limited and associating with my own peers was questionable in my father’s
eyes.

As I matured, I have learned to take responsibilities seriously and it has helped me provide what I need to provide for my family as well as my children. I have taken pieces and pieces of the non-stop lectures and the disciplinary actions that I received while I was young, and painted a picture in my heart and soul so that I don’t forget how important family value is in everyday life.

Reasons for Joining This Program:
For three years I have been a Caseworker for Child Protective Services situated under the Department of Human and Social Services. This is a job that requires a lot of time management, decision making, consistency, and lot of patients. In a way my job is similar to what I do at home as mother and as a wife, which is not easy. I am very grateful for this opportunity to be able to enroll in this Bachelor’s Program.
As a mother of three and with the economy on the rise, I need to be able to provide more than what I am providing now. With this degree I would have something to fall on in the future when asking for a raise, a promotion, or even an open door opportunity in a higher position. Not only that but to expand my knowledge in this field that I have a great interest in.

One of My Special Talents Is:
My special talent is my personality, which I believe has helped me become who I am today. I am a social person who loves to meet new people, and getting to know them well. Being talented in playing the piano or being athletic in so many sports of course is a special talent but I believe my special talent has more rhythm and is a powerful weapon that builds a special bond between me and the different types people I deal with every day.

25. Young, Genevieve
gyoung.sdsuba@gmail.com

Personal/Work Info:
My name is Genevieve Young. I am a single parent of two beautiful boys ages 13 and 10. I am currently employed by the Department of Human and Social Services in the "Child Protective Services" unit. I deal with abuse and neglect issues concerning minor children. Prior to that, I worked at ASCC-American Samoa Community College for two years and taught in a private elementary school for twelve years since 1989.

Reasons for Joining This Program:
This is truly an opportunity that not everyone gets. After receiving my AA degree in Liberal Arts in 2006, a BA in Education at ASCC opened up. I took advantage of the chance to continue higher education. Unfortunately, it all stopped because at one semester, class was canceled due to a low number of registered students. The following semester, I was denied again due to a "hold" stemming from accreditation issues. Eventually, I lost interest. Thankfully, 3 years later, this BA program surfaced and I did not think twice. I wish to learn and grow as much as I can to perfect my service to my community and families of my home island. By doing this, my own family benefits.

One of My Special Talents Is:
Clear verbal communication is my favorite, (as in being the trainer) especially when I know my topic. I love to write, but I need complete silence to do that.
