Course Desciptions

The course sequence is based on the required courses for the Master of Arts in Education with a concentration in Educational Leadership. The typical courses offered for these types of programs are:

ARP 605 (Postsecondary Education) 3 units:
Philosophy, history aims, scope, function, outcomes, principles and problems of postsecondary education. Relationship of K-12 education to postsecondary education.

ARP 610 (Educational Leadership)3 units :
Concepts and techniques of leadership, analysis of the factors and practice in the procedures of individual and group leadership as applied to education environments.

ARP 720 (Educational Human Resource) 3 units :
Human resource management in preK-12 educational administration including selection and evaluation of staff, contract management, and staff development. Personnel managerial styles, staff leadership, and motivation techniques as to morale and productivity. Analysis of educational personnel systems and employee assistance programs.

ARP 727 (Emerging Issues in Postsecondary Education) 3 units :
Identification and analysis of emerging local, national, and international issues impacting preK-12 educational organizations.

ARP 730 (Seminar in Adult Learning)3 units :
Patterns and implications for adult life-long learning.

ARP 747 (Educational Leadership in a Diverse Society) 3 units:
Current theory and practice in meeting needs of diverse learning. Leadership and administration of educational organizations as political complex systems requiring consensus building dynamic in a multicultural society.

ED 690 (Procedures of Investigation and Report)3 units :
Research methods in Education. Location, selection, and analysis of professional literature. Methods of investigation, data analysis, and reporting.

ED 791A (Evaluation Techniques)3 units :
Theory and practice of instructional program and product evaluation.

ED 791B (Practicum: Evaluation)3 units :
Supervised experience in conducting a program or product evaluation, strategy selection, procedures, reporting methods, culminating in a written project.

ARP 740 Advanced Seminar in Administration Postsecondary Education 3 units:
Study of a selected area in administration, rehabilitation or postsecondary education, such as educational law, finance, supervision, personnel procedures, etc.

ELECTIVES: *
Students must take 6 units of elective coursework. The content of these electives will be determined through input from SDSU Faculty and program participants. Coursework is presented during the evening in two week intensive study blocks at the SDSU Campus. Students should expect to complete course readings prior to each course. Some courses will require assignments that are completed after the instructional period. You will be required to have access to email and the internet.
