Preparing disabled students for the workplace

San Diego — College students with disabilities can learn the same career skills as any other student, but sometimes that’s not enough to actually get a job after school.

Issues that range from the student’s self-doubt to an employer’s bias can create obstacles for job-seekers with disabilities, a national survey has found.

To overcome those hurdles, San Diego State University has adopted a curriculum developed by UC Berkeley professor to help students with special challenges prepare for the job market.

While similar programs usually have been offered as workshops, SDSU is offering it as a semester-long, three-unit class as part of the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation, and Postsecondary Education in the College of Education.

“The idea that students can come every week and build on their skills and confidence is a really different approach,” said Caren Sax, professor and chair of the department and co-director of the Interwork Institute at SDSU.
