Current Students

The Masters of Arts in Education with a Concentration in Educational Leadership and a Specialization in Student Affairs in Postsecondary Education curriculum at San Diego State University is designed for practitioners.  The program emphasizes student learning centeredness, integration of the curricular and co- curricular learning paradigms, and analysis, planning, and responsible practice of leaders in a socially just and global environment.

The program utilizes leadership theories to educate students in a manner that will allow them to become savvy consumers of research in order to apply ethical evidence-based decision making to promote access, equity, and quality student development and learning.

Through students' coursework and interactions with professional staff and faculty, as well as their peers, students will achieve the following learning outcomes in this program.  Students will be able to:

• Articulate the theoretical foundation of the student affairs/services profession and its research (College Central Tendency Scholarship)
• Identify integration of student developmental epistemologies with student learning epistemologies and opportunities to apply them (College Central Tendency Uniqueness of Individuals)
• Evaluate how students come into the institution and with what characteristics and preparation and propose strategies for engagement and retention  (College Central Tendency Access to a Quality Public Education)
• Identify and strategically work with varying leadership styles that are prevalent within a postsecondary context (Central College Tendency Diversity)
• Identify one’s own leadership strengths and identify areas in need of further development (College Central Tendency Uniqueness of Individuals)
• Identify ethical dilemmas in postsecondary leadership and propose multiple solutions
• Engage in meaningful outcomes-based assessment of collaboratively designed student learning and development programs and initiatives (College Central Tendency Community of Learners, Scholarship, and Excellence in Teaching)
• Articulate  and apply the foundational principles of  diversity, social justice, and internationalization (Central College Tendency Access to a Quality Public Education)
• Apply research to practice, particularly in their area of specialization and focus (College Central Tendency Scholarship)
• Communicate ideas and concepts effectively in both the written and spoken word
