The Census Information
Center (CIC) provides an effective vehicle for the dissemination
of information and data produced by the U.S. Census Bureau to underserved
communities. The CIC Program is a cooperative program between the
U.S. Census Bureau and non-governmental organizations that make
census information and data available to the public. In 1988, following
a year of joint development, the National Urban League and the U.S.
Census Bureau inaugurated the CIC Program. This was a cooperative
venture that engaged national community-based organizations and
their affiliates as auxiliary data distribution centers serving
segments of the underserved population.
The Center for Pacific Studies at the Interwork Institute of San
Diego State University serves persons with disabilities with a focus
on individuals who are Pacific Islanders. The Center, through its
use of education, research, and advocacy, work in partnership with
individuals and organizations to enable communities to support,
appreciate, and engage diverse members from traditionally underserved
populations. The Center at the secondary Education within the College
of Education, San Diego State University, and operates under the
direction of Professors Fred McFarlane and Ian Pumpian. The Center
for Pacific Studies is an outgrowth of the Rehabilitation Research
and Training Center of the Pacific at San Diego State University
(RRTCP). The RRTCP was a five-year project funded by the National
Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, Office of Special
Education and Rehabilitative Services, U.S. Department of Education.
The Interwork Institute's mission is to enable individuals, organizations,
and communities to support, appreciate, and engage diverse members
in community integration through the use of education, research,
and advocacy. To achieve this mission, the Center has initiated
seven strategic choices:
-
Foster, demonstrate, and furnish quality learning opportunities,
such as formal academic degrees and certificates, to promote
preparation of diverse competent and knowledgeable educators,
counselors, administrators, employees, and other providers who
assist the target consumers and organizations
-
Enhance the continued qualifications of such providers
-
Expand and sustain partnerships with organizations, constituency
groups, and individuals to insure diversity
-
Impact policies and practices via a comprehensive plan to achieve
inclusiveness
-
Demonstrate research and evaluation models that enhance outcomes
for the target consumers
-
Use stat-of-the-art technologies to insure that the needs of
diverse learners are met
-
Articulate and demonstrate values consistent with inclusive
communities
