WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.566 --> 00:00:03.366 Hi everyone, 2 00:00:03.366 --> 00:00:09.666 Thanks very much for your interest in applying to the rehabilitation counseling program at SDSU. 3 00:00:09.666 --> 00:00:14.999 I’m Mark Tucker, Coordinator of SDSU’s Rehabilitation Counseling Program. 4 00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:19.866 If you are applying to SDSU’s campus-based rehabilitation counseling program, 5 00:00:19.866 --> 00:00:25.199 during the application process you will be prompted to indicate whether you are applying 6 00:00:25.200 --> 00:00:29.566 to the generalist track or the psychiatric rehabilitation track, 7 00:00:29.566 --> 00:00:32.799 which is sometimes referred to as the clinical track. 8 00:00:32.800 --> 00:00:37.700 Although both tracks lead to a master of science degree in rehabilitation counseling, 9 00:00:37.700 --> 00:00:42.133 the university regards the two tracks as different majors. 10 00:00:42.133 --> 00:00:46.833 Your decision has significant implications, for your application and your program of study, 11 00:00:46.833 --> 00:00:54.199 so we’re providing information about the two program tracks with the hope that doing so will help you to decide between the two options. 12 00:00:54.200 --> 00:01:01.133 We will also provide additional information and suggestions that might be useful to you. 13 00:01:01.133 --> 00:01:07.633 It might be best to start with a summary of the most significant similarities and differences between the tracks. 14 00:01:07.633 --> 00:01:13.399 The primary focus of rehabilitation counseling, regardless of program track or specialization, 15 00:01:13.400 --> 00:01:19.800 is that rehabilitation counselors work with individuals with disabilities around goals related to employment, 16 00:01:19.800 --> 00:01:24.133 education, training, and independent living. 17 00:01:24.133 --> 00:01:29.599 Both program tracks will include a major emphasis upon employment of individuals with disabilities, 18 00:01:29.600 --> 00:01:35.566 as employment and disability are central to the profession of rehabilitation counseling. 19 00:01:35.566 --> 00:01:41.399 Both program tracks lead to eligibility to take the national certifying exam for rehabilitation counselors, 20 00:01:41.400 --> 00:01:46.000 the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, or CRC, exam. 21 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:50.866 In fact, we use the CRC exam as our program’s comprehensive exam. 22 00:01:50.866 --> 00:01:55.366 In lieu of completing a master’s thesis students can take and pass the CRC exam 23 00:01:55.366 --> 00:01:59.599 and become certified as rehabilitation counselors once they graduate. 24 00:01:59.600 --> 00:02:05.700 The main distinctions between the two tracks are the focal populations, and license-eligibility. 25 00:02:05.700 --> 00:02:12.700 The generalist track as you might imagine, incorporates a broad focus upon individuals with a wide variety of disabilities; 26 00:02:12.700 --> 00:02:20.900 for example, cognitive disabilities, orthopedic disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, and sensory disabilities. 27 00:02:20.900 --> 00:02:25.700 The psychiatric rehabilitation track also addresses disabilities generally to an extent, 28 00:02:25.700 --> 00:02:29.666 but has a more intensive focus upon psychiatric disabilities. 29 00:02:29.666 --> 00:02:35.099 While both tracks lead to eligibility to take the CRC exam and become nationally certified; 30 00:02:35.100 --> 00:02:39.866 the psychiatric rehabilitation track is designed to permit graduates to pursue licensure 31 00:02:39.866 --> 00:02:45.466 in California as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, or LPCC. 32 00:02:45.466 --> 00:02:55.466 The generalist track is not designed with intensive psychiatric rehabilitation training and LPCC eligibility as goals. 33 00:02:55.466 --> 00:03:00.699 Here I would like to briefly share some of the history of the LPCC license in California 34 00:03:00.700 --> 00:03:05.733 and the interaction between licensure and rehabilitation counseling. 35 00:03:05.733 --> 00:03:12.599 For most of the history of rehabilitation counseling in California, rehabilitation counselors had no license options. 36 00:03:12.600 --> 00:03:19.033 California was the last state in the union to offer a path to licensure for rehabilitation counselors. 37 00:03:19.033 --> 00:03:23.266 Applications for licensure became available in mid-2011. 38 00:03:23.266 --> 00:03:28.432 The rehabilitation counseling profession existed in the state for many decades prior to licensure, 39 00:03:28.433 --> 00:03:34.099 and as a result, to this day, most rehabilitation counseling positions do not require a license, 40 00:03:34.100 --> 00:03:37.933 although there are some settings where a license could be advantageous, 41 00:03:37.933 --> 00:03:44.533 particularly in psychiatric rehabilitation settings; I’ll share more information about that shortly. 42 00:03:44.533 --> 00:03:51.366 Briefly, license requirements are similar to requirements for LCSWs and MFTs. 43 00:03:51.366 --> 00:03:57.499 A sixty semester-unit master’s or doctoral degree is required that includes content in 13 core areas, 44 00:03:57.500 --> 00:04:00.566 along with supervised counseling practicum. 45 00:04:00.566 --> 00:04:07.066 After graduating those pursing the license must complete 3,000 hours of clinical mental health counseling experience 46 00:04:07.066 --> 00:04:10.499 under the supervision of an approved supervisor. 47 00:04:10.500 --> 00:04:15.766 Those pursuing the license must also pass the California LPCC Law and Ethics Exam 48 00:04:15.766 --> 00:04:21.766 and the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination to be licensed in the state of California. 49 00:04:21.766 --> 00:04:30.899 Licensing requirements do vary from state to state as do regulations related to recognition of licenses across state lines. 50 00:04:30.900 --> 00:04:39.766 The two program tracks share fifteen of the twenty courses, so 75% of the coursework in the different tracks is the same. 51 00:04:39.766 --> 00:04:44.132 This fact underscores the idea that the two track are more similar than different, 52 00:04:44.133 --> 00:04:50.333 and are united by a focus upon employment and independent living for people with disabilities. 53 00:04:50.333 --> 00:04:54.399 Here are the courses that are shared by the two tracks: 54 00:04:54.400 --> 00:04:58.166 ARP 645: Assessment in Rehabilitation 55 00:04:58.166 --> 00:05:01.732 ARP 646: Career Development 56 00:05:01.733 --> 00:05:06.766 ARP 660: Theory and Process of Counseling in Rehabilitation 57 00:05:06.766 --> 00:05:10.266 ARP 684: Rehabilitation Foundations 58 00:05:10.266 --> 00:05:16.799 ARP 685A and ARP 685B: Medical and Psychological Aspects of Disability 59 00:05:16.800 --> 00:05:21.733 ARP 687: Job Development for Individuals with Disabilities 60 00:05:21.733 --> 00:05:25.733 ED 690: Methods of Inquiry 61 00:05:25.733 --> 00:05:31.799 ARP 615: Seminar in Multicultural Dimensions in Rehabilitation Counseling 62 00:05:31.800 --> 00:05:36.600 ARP 648: Group Dynamics in Rehabilitation 63 00:05:36.600 --> 00:05:40.366 ARP 708: Human Development and Disability 64 00:05:40.366 --> 00:05:46.066 ARP 755: Governance and Policy in Disability Systems 65 00:05:46.066 --> 00:05:48.966 ARP 744: Beginning Practicum 66 00:05:48.966 --> 00:05:51.832 ARP 744: Intermediate Practicum 67 00:05:51.833 --> 00:05:57.066 ARP 745: Internship 68 00:05:57.066 --> 00:06:01.099 Here is where the coursework differs between the two program tracks. 69 00:06:01.100 --> 00:06:05.433 The General track offers courses in rehabilitation technology, program development, 70 00:06:05.433 --> 00:06:11.366 and grant writing, along with two electives that can be applied toward one of two specializations – 71 00:06:11.366 --> 00:06:17.266 a specialization in cognitive disabilities or a specialization in rehabilitation technology – 72 00:06:17.266 --> 00:06:24.566 or the electives can be used to take other courses agreed upon by the student and their advisor. 73 00:06:24.566 --> 00:06:29.066 The psychiatric rehabilitation track has courses focused upon psychiatric disabilities, 74 00:06:29.066 --> 00:06:35.566 including psychiatric rehabilitation and co-occurring disorders, principles of psychiatric rehabilitation, 75 00:06:35.566 --> 00:06:42.199 trauma, substance abuse, and psychopharmacology. 76 00:06:42.200 --> 00:06:45.900 Let’s talk about common employment settings for rehabilitation counselors 77 00:06:45.900 --> 00:06:49.733 with attention to the distinctions between the program tracks. 78 00:06:49.733 --> 00:06:54.633 The settings discussed are those that are common or somewhat common for graduates of our program. 79 00:06:54.633 --> 00:07:02.999 There are certainly opportunities for graduates to chart their own paths or pursue opportunities that are unique or less common. 80 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:07.200 Graduates of both program tracks can use the degree to pursue employment as counselors 81 00:07:07.200 --> 00:07:14.133 in state/federal vocational rehabilitation agencies such as the Department of Rehabilitation in California; 82 00:07:14.133 --> 00:07:19.533 there are over eighty of these state vocational rehabilitation agencies across the nation. 83 00:07:19.533 --> 00:07:25.299 Graduates can also pursue federal positions as rehabilitation counselors with the Department of Veterans Affairs, 84 00:07:25.300 --> 00:07:27.633 Veterans Benefits Administration. 85 00:07:27.633 --> 00:07:33.166 Graduates also work in disability support programs in postsecondary education institutions, 86 00:07:33.166 --> 00:07:38.566 in developmental disabilities services agencies such as the Regional Center system in California, 87 00:07:38.566 --> 00:07:43.699 in private rehabilitation settings conducting case management or forensic rehabilitation work, 88 00:07:43.700 --> 00:07:48.000 and in community-based rehabilitation programs. 89 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:52.100 The psychiatric rehabilitation track offers exposure at a greater level of depth 90 00:07:52.100 --> 00:07:57.933 to psychiatric rehabilitation principles which may be useful in settings such as assertive community treatment programs, 91 00:07:57.933 --> 00:08:01.933 crisis houses, and substance use rehabilitation settings. 92 00:08:01.933 --> 00:08:06.733 Those with the license may also pursue mental health counselor positions with the Department of Veterans Affairs 93 00:08:06.733 --> 00:08:12.066 under the Veterans Health Administration, and may compete for other positions requiring licensure; 94 00:08:12.066 --> 00:08:15.199 typically these positions are not rehabilitation counselor positions 95 00:08:15.200 --> 00:08:18.633 but may have titles such as licensed mental health counselor. 96 00:08:18.633 --> 00:08:23.599 Occasionally our program has applicants whose interests lie in psychotherapy. 97 00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:27.366 They wish to pursue a career focused upon therapeutic mental health counseling 98 00:08:27.366 --> 00:08:32.899 where they engage in talk therapy to help individuals to address a broad range of emotional difficulties 99 00:08:32.900 --> 00:08:35.666 or symptoms of mental illness. 100 00:08:35.666 --> 00:08:41.366 If you have a primary interest in being a psychotherapist and are considering applying to the rehabilitation counseling program, 101 00:08:41.366 --> 00:08:45.099 I would suggest that our program is not the right program for you. 102 00:08:45.100 --> 00:08:47.966 Psychotherapy is not a focus of our program. 103 00:08:47.966 --> 00:08:51.499 The full-time faculty do not backgrounds as psychotherapists 104 00:08:51.500 --> 00:08:56.266 and our clinical experiences are not designed to help individuals become psychotherapists. 105 00:08:56.266 --> 00:09:01.099 SDSU does have other degree programs that emphasize therapeutic counseling 106 00:09:01.100 --> 00:09:06.666 and I would encourage you to consider applying to those programs if you have an interest in psychotherapy. 107 00:09:06.666 --> 00:09:12.699 Rehabilitation counselors are trained in brief counseling interventions focused upon practical problem-solving 108 00:09:12.700 --> 00:09:16.866 related to employment, education or training, and independent living and our coursework 109 00:09:16.866 --> 00:09:22.866 and clinical experiences are grounded in that type of practice. 110 00:09:22.866 --> 00:09:28.932 To further underscore this point, the rehabilitation counseling program is currently accredited by CACREP – 111 00:09:28.933 --> 00:09:33.833 the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. 112 00:09:33.833 --> 00:09:38.133 The general track is accredited under the Rehabilitation Counseling specialty area 113 00:09:38.133 --> 00:09:43.799 and the psychiatric rehabilitation track is accredited dually under the Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling 114 00:09:43.800 --> 00:09:47.166 and Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialty areas. 115 00:09:47.166 --> 00:09:51.099 During the next accreditation cycle the rehabilitation counseling program 116 00:09:51.100 --> 00:09:55.833 does not intend to maintain the Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialty area. 117 00:09:55.833 --> 00:10:00.199 We intend to apply under the Rehabilitation Counseling specialty area for the generalist track 118 00:10:00.200 --> 00:10:06.833 and the Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling specialty area for the psychiatric rehabilitation track. 119 00:10:06.833 --> 00:10:10.966 Here I will share some additional details about the program tracks. 120 00:10:10.966 --> 00:10:19.399 First, we do have a distance program in rehabilitation counseling that is only open to individuals living outside San Diego County. 121 00:10:19.400 --> 00:10:23.200 The distance program does not offer the psychiatric rehabilitation track 122 00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:28.766 or any of the certificate options mentioned in this presentation or on the program’s web site; 123 00:10:28.766 --> 00:10:33.966 the generalist track option is the only track available in the distance program. 124 00:10:33.966 --> 00:10:40.766 With respect to admissions, we admit roughly equal numbers of students to each track of the campus-based program. 125 00:10:40.766 --> 00:10:46.232 The psychiatric rehabilitation track has, during the past few years, received more applications, 126 00:10:46.233 --> 00:10:52.166 so admission to the psychiatric rehabilitation track is typically more competitive. 127 00:10:52.166 --> 00:10:56.566 The rehabilitation counseling program does have stipend funding that we offer to students. 128 00:10:56.566 --> 00:11:00.566 The amount of funding and the number of students we can support varies over time. 129 00:11:00.566 --> 00:11:05.299 Presently I would estimate that we have funding to provide stipend support to approximately 40% of the students 130 00:11:05.300 --> 00:11:07.566 enrolled in the program. 131 00:11:07.566 --> 00:11:10.699 Currently we have stipend funding to offer to students in both tracks, 132 00:11:10.700 --> 00:11:14.033 but have more stipend spots in the generalist track. 133 00:11:14.033 --> 00:11:18.399 However, as I mentioned previously, funding amounts and the number of available spots 134 00:11:18.400 --> 00:11:22.833 are subject to change over time. 135 00:11:22.833 --> 00:11:28.266 In closing I’d like to make some suggestions with respect to deciding upon a program track: 136 00:11:28.266 --> 00:11:31.999 First, I’d encourage you to carefully consider your choice of program track 137 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:35.466 and any specializations that you might choose to pursue. 138 00:11:35.466 --> 00:11:39.732 I’d recommend trying to align your choices with your long-range career plans. 139 00:11:39.733 --> 00:11:43.266 Which employment settings appeal most to you? 140 00:11:43.266 --> 00:11:46.932 The types of work you wish to be doing and the populations that you wish to serve 141 00:11:46.933 --> 00:11:51.266 could inform your decision about program tracks and specializations. 142 00:11:51.266 --> 00:11:55.666 I would also encourage you to review rehabilitation counselor position announcements – 143 00:11:55.666 --> 00:12:00.166 current announcements as well as those that have been issued in the past. 144 00:12:00.166 --> 00:12:03.832 Doing so should give you a sense of the requirements and desired qualifications 145 00:12:03.833 --> 00:12:08.366 associated with the opportunities to practice that appeal most to you. 146 00:12:08.366 --> 00:12:14.632 The rehabilitation counseling program faculty may be able to share examples of position announcements with you upon request. 147 00:12:14.633 --> 00:12:17.966 You might also consider meeting with or interviewing rehabilitation counselors 148 00:12:17.966 --> 00:12:25.866 practicing in settings that are of interest to you as they may be able to offer suggestions related to program track and specializations. 149 00:12:25.866 --> 00:12:31.099 I would also suggest that you review the 2021 salary report for certified rehabilitation counselors 150 00:12:31.100 --> 00:12:34.866 authored by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification, 151 00:12:34.866 --> 00:12:38.966 which can be found at the URL on the presentation slide. 152 00:12:38.966 --> 00:12:45.032 Finally, I would suggest that you consult with a variety of sources related to rehabilitation counseling and licensure; 153 00:12:45.033 --> 00:12:48.999 there are a wide range of opinions related to rehabilitation counseling and licensure, 154 00:12:49.000 --> 00:12:55.966 which underscores the importance of gathering information from several sources of information that you consider trustworthy. 155 00:12:55.966 --> 00:13:00.332 The rehabilitation counseling faculty can offer suggestions and information that may help to inform your decision 156 00:13:00.333 --> 00:13:07.166 and may also be able to connect you with professionals in the field who can share their perspectives. 157 00:13:07.166 --> 00:13:09.866 Thank you very much for viewing this presentation. 158 00:13:09.866 --> 00:13:21.066 I hope the information is helpful to you as you consider applying to the rehabilitation counseling program.
