Course Description
Samoa MA - Course Descriptions
The course sequence is based on the required courses for the Master of Arts in Education with a concentration in Educational Leadership. The typical courses offered for these types of programs are:
1. ARP 610: Educational Leadership (3 units):
Concepts and techniques of leadership, analysis of the factors and practice in the procedures of individual and group leadership as applied to education and related fields.
2. ARP 730: Seminar in Adult Learning (3 units):
Exploration of patterns and implications of life-long learning. Emphasizes adult learning principles and styles, effects of adult development changes on learning, and teaching techniques in adult education programs.
3. EDL 610: Visionary Leadership (3 units):
This course embodies concepts and techniques of leadership, analysis of factors and practices and procedures of individual and group leadership as applied to educational environments. Students are introduced to the importance of vision and the process for developing, sustaining and communicating that vision to achieve higher student achievement by actively and meaningfully including stakeholders.
4. EDL 630: School Improvement Leadership (3 units):
The purpose of this course is to learn first-hand how a school leader selects a student group in need of improvement by retrieving and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data on the school. As such, this course focuses on analyzing data to identify opportunities for school improvement. It develops the MA candidate's knowledge about appropriate and effective school improvement theories and strategies, including communication skills and leading others in improvement and monitoring of these efforts.
5. ARP 740: Advanced Seminar: Educational Systems and Management (3 units):

7. ARP 747: Educational Leadership in a Diverse Society (3 units):
Current theory and practice in meeting needs of diverse learners. Leadership and administration of educational organizations as political, complex systems requiring consensus-building dynamics in a multicultural society.
8. ED 690: Methods of Inquiry (3 units):
Procedures for gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing information; reviewing the literature; designing studies utilizing statistical procedures.
9. ED 791a: Evaluation Techniques (3 units):
Prerequisites: Education 690 and advancement to candidacy for the Master’s Degree. Theory and practice in program development and evaluation. This course provides the theory and ED 791B provides the application.
10. ED 791b: Practicum: Evaluation (3 units):
Supervised experience in conducting a program or product evaluation, strategy selection, procedures, reporting methods, culminating in a written project. ED 791A and B are linked together and typically are taught together over a period of six months. The work product is a culminating study for the MA degree.
